So... I Steamed My Vagina. Now What?
While surfing the web not long ago, you did a double take when you came across a headline that read
“Steam my WHAT?” you thought.
Though vaginal steaming – aka yoni steaming – sounded strange, you were intrigued by the fact that women have shared this wisdom of wellness among one another throughout history.
There’s got to be something to that, right?
Reading on, you noticed that yoni steaming was “known to end menstrual cramps” and you couldn’t help but think, “hallelujah… there is hope!”
You heard women rave that their periods were lighter and easier, and you thought, “I’d give up my morning coffee to be one of those gals!”
You relished in the tales women tell of relaxation and delightful self-indulgence via the ancient practice of vaginal steaming, thinking you wouldn't mind a little spa-retreat in the comfort of your own home.
So you decided to try it.
You ordered your Devi Steam organic yoni steaming herbs, arranged your yoni steam set up (which was easier than you thought!), and sat yourself down to enjoy 30 minutes of gentle steam sweetly permeating your lady parts.
And then…
Your cycle came a couple weeks later and, well, things were different down there. The results were not exactly what you expected, and you wondered if it was all okay.
I’m here to tell you not to worry…it is normal!
While the effect of yoni steaming varies among women, here are a few important things to keep in mind:
1. Enjoy the ritual
You should feel reconnected, relaxed and rejuvenated during and immediately after your yoni steam. Take this time to release stored emotions, and send loving intention to your womb. This is the first and primary benefit. Enjoy it!
2. Be patient
You won’t notice any significant discharge or change in your cycle during or immediately after you steam. This gentle treatment requires patience before any significant physical changes are noticeable. Now is the time to trust that the medicinal properties of the herbs have entered your bloodstream and are quietly doing their work on your system.
3. Things might get "worse" before they get better
When your cycle comes for the first time after you steam, you may notice a significant change that can sometimes be shocking! Your flow may be much heavier, darker, thicker and may even last for longer this time around. While you may find this unpleasant (or even concerning), keep in mind that it is a sign that the Devi Steam is working – and that your next cycle will be easier and more enjoyable!
You see, all of that “stuff” in there is what has been causing the pain, bloating and exhaustion that you may have been experiencing during each cycle month after month. All of that excess material has been stuck to your uterine lining (or venous lakes as the hills and valleys of the lining are called), and could also be part of the reason you’ve had trouble conceiving a child.
Now is the time to be thrilled that your body is able to flush all of this material out, and cleanse itself so thoroughly! Marvel at how well your body works with just the gentle assistance of herbal steam. Don’t worry, it won’t be this heavy, dark or thick forever, and your cycle certainly won't last this long in the future.
4. There may be benefits you can't see with your eyes
If you notice no change after steaming once or twice, that’s also normal. Your uterus may not have excessive build-up, or it may take more work to dislodge it. In either case, stick with the yoni steams for at least another two to three months. Steaming regularly helps your uterus stay clear and toned, and keeps you feeling balanced and centered, so even if you aren’t able to see a major shift, just know that your strongest organ is still gaining a benefit.
5. There's a lot to look forward to
Over time, your cycle is likely to become significantly more comfortable – meaning it will be more regular, lighter in both flow and color, and less painful. You’ll begin to feel lighter and healthier, as well as more nourished and connected with your womb the more you steam.
6. Steaming is great for healing after birth
If you are steaming to enhance healing and toning of your system after giving birth, know that you are utilizing the wisdom of traditional Mayan midwives! Note that steaming may increase your discharge of lochia, especially in the month after birthing. This discharge will last 6-8 weeks after birthing, with or without yoni steaming.
7. Keep a close eye on areas of particular concern
If you are working to heal a vaginal tear or hemorrhoids, be sure to keep a close eye on your areas of concern after steaming. Be sure these areas do not feel itchy or hot to the touch, and that no excess discharge is present. If symptoms worsen after steaming, stop immediately and seek support from your holistic healthcare provider.
The bottom line is… things change down there after steaming! You tried steaming because you wanted to make a big change in your body and your life, and this is it!
My advice to you is to enjoy the ritual of yoni steaming as the delightful experience it is, to be patient, and most importantly, to understand your beautiful body as it miraculously cleanses and heals itself.
Your body is a miracle, indeed!
